This club is no longer meeting - If there is enough interest we will revive it some time in the future. Please email me if you are keen to do so.
The Fourways Scrabble Club was launched on 13 July 2009 We meet weekly on Monday evenings from 18h30 till quite late. Venue is at The Brazen Head Pub at The Leaping Frog Centre on William Nicol Drive in Lonehill Club will be run by myself and Simone Woods but will be quite informal so there may be the odd night when one or both of us are not there. I would like to make this a really fun place for all levels of player to come and have a few games each week. To achieve this the following guidelines need to be followed. Beginners should feel free to use two and three letter word lists and even a dictionary if agreed by both players. However no anagram books or machines should be consulted during games. Nobody should feel obliged to play anyone else. Sometimes less experienced players are really intimidated by playing experts and sometimes higher rated players feel they are wasting their time by playing someone of less ability. Please respect this and don't take it personally, we all want something different from our Scrabble. Personally I am happy to play anyone from complete novices to grandmasters. Playing with clocks will be encouraged. It is no fun for your opponent to sit and watch you ponder your moves for hours. We are using a restaurant so please order at least a few drinks/coffees etc and ideally something to eat. Most players will stay for far longer and spend far less than the average customer so please bear this in mind when tipping the waitstaff as well. I would hate us to become unwelcome guests. We will be charging a nominal fee of R5 per week to build up a club kitty. I will offer coaching sessions to those who want, covering such aspects as tactics, learning methods, tournament rules and etiquette etc. Besides having fun the aim of the club will be to improve the level of everyone's game. I will try to get some club boards which will stay at the restaurant but please bring your own sets in case there are not enough.
